What We Do

  • Build a community of scholars and artists interested in pushing the limits of XR research, pedagogy, and design (creative production/practice).
  • Showcase innovative applications of XR in research, pedagogy, and the arts.
  • Curate exemplary XR projects and resources across campus.
  • Connect UCLA & UC’s to community and industry partners.
  • Practice XR to creatively address environmental, societal, and health challenges of today’s world.
  • Advocate for ethical use of XR, its equitable distribution, inclusive design, and accessibility for all.

Who We Are

The Extended Reality Initiative is an informal collective of immersive tech enthusiasts across the UC system. Our goal is to foster organic connections between students, staff, faculty, researchers, artists, and industry professionals who are interested in sharing resources and collaborating on XR-related content. We do this by creating a safe space to ask questions and learn from one another. Transparency is key. Because this initiative began at UCLA, we will focus on communicating XR-related resources on our campus in hopes that they will be helpful and can inspire people to congregate across the other UC’s. If you’d like to partner with us in a more official capacity, please email ucla.xri@gmail.com.

Member Participation & Volunteer Opportunities

Working Group Meetings: We will begin meeting once a quarter starting in the Fall 2024 and will have open slots for anyone to demo their work and to obtain feedback from our working group members. Prior monthly meetings and guest presentations can be found on this public folder. However, we do encourage folks to self-organize more frequent meetups whether this is virtual or online. Details on this and any other meetings should be posted and made accessible to the community by being communicated through either the mailing list: xr@lists.ucla.edu or slack channel.

Facilitators: XRI facilitators are voluntary roles that active working group members can choose to take on. It is a great opportunity to connect with other XR creators on a deeper level and positively shape the working group’s culture. Roles include subcommittee leaders, communication officer, and social events coordinator.

Some responsibilities include:

  • self-organize meetings with members
  • communicate relevant news + events on slack & email
  • provide a quick summary of activities during quarterly meetings
  • take photos at any in-person event
  • coordinate in-person group meetups
